Sketchup has even more power when you combine it with a virtual world. Google Earth lacks the social aspects of a virtual world like Second Life. I've written about using Sketchup to bring models into realXtend (http://tinyurl.com/7m3ftk), a variant of Opensim, which is in turn an open source clone of Second Life. RealXtend and Opensim are being merged at present. When complete, the various Opensim grids will add new capabilities for non-profits that want to encourage community exploration of different designs for redevelopment, energy-efficient buildings or open spave design.

Nice article!

I just sat in on a presentation on SketchUp 7 by Chris Cronin. We have a spirited conversation about the benefits of SketchUp for nonprofit organizations -- and he referred me to your website.

We have used SketchUp pretty extensively to facilitate community feedback on a community center project we have been working on -- and it has been very, very helpful.
